Are you pro or anti free school meals?

For me it’s been great to see so many success stories flooding into the media over the last 3 weeks over the UIFSM’s (Universal Infant Free School Meals) only to be closely followed by as many reports on their failings. I do tend to wear rosy coloured spectacles but I strongly believe the UIFSM can offer huge health benefits for children age 5-7 in England IF they are done well.

For reference, here is the advice from the Government that will come into force from 1st January 2015.

Helping low-income families

One of the key benefits of the revised standards is that UIFSM’s can help minimise the gap between low and high income families. There will be no comparison or competition of lunch box contents; they all get the same. This is about equity; we can’t provide for some and not others, even if you think the higher income families can afford to buy their children lunches. The School Food Plan stated 57% of children were not eating school lunches at all. Some grazing on snacks for most of the day whilst others instead go off-site to buy their lunch. UIFSM’s help ensure every child gets a healthy meal.

Many families simply can’t afford to provide their children with lunch. 3,800,000 children are growing up in severe income poverty. We know that free school meals on the old scheme were not necessarily taken up as ‘vulnerable’ children were easily identified and often the subject of bullying. We also know that children in low-income groups tend to eat fewer portions of fruit and vegetables, and have higher sugar intakes and lower fibre intakes than the population as a whole (Food Standards Agency, 2007).  A free school meal may be the only decent meal a child receives during the day. There is also funding for schools with over 35% of pupils eligible for free school meals to receive support to set up a breakfast club  – see the Magic Breakfast website.

Better than lunch boxes

Many parents still mistakenly imagine that a packed lunch is the healthiest option. I read news reports that parents were still sending their kids in with a packed lunch, despite them being provided with a free lunch at school. After all mum (or dad) knows best doesn’t she (he)?! What a waste of food and money! In fact, it is far easier to get the necessary nutrients into a cooked meal than a cold meal.   A study commissioned by the Foods Standards Agency in 2010 found  only 1% of packed lunches met the nutritional standards that currently apply to school food.  Wow! A healthy packed lunch policy is voluntary in schools so many parents may be ignorant of what they should be putting in their child’s box.  82% of the lunch boxes in the study contained foods high in saturated fat, salt and sugar, with items chosen by parents including crisps, sweets, biscuits and sweetened drinks. Only 1 in 5 packed lunches contained any vegetables or salad and about half included 1 item of fruit.

Better attainment

If children are to play, learn, develop, run around and generally get everything from life, they need to fuel their body with healthy foods. If children are missing meals or eating the wrong foods, they are likely to suffer from tiredness, poor attention, impatience, irritability and poor attainment in school. Of course, if children are not getting the right nutrition they need, they may be more susceptible to illness. This may result in a higher absenteeism rate, which can also have a negative  effect on attainment.

Where did this idea of UIFSM’s come from?

School food standards were introduced back in 2007 to help ensure children ate healthy and nutritious food at school.  In July last year, an independent review was completed by the School Food Plan who then made a number of key recommendations for school meals (including free meals) to the Department of Education. Since then, the Government launched the revised school food standards that are meant to be easier to understand.

The main difference is that these new standards for UIFSM’s are food-based only, (not nutrition based as school meals are for other age groups) which primarily means schools (and their caterers) will no longer have to analyse the food they offer for its nutritional content. The Children’s Food Trust provides a great summary of what is in each of the 6 food groups here.  The School Food Plan (SFP) has apparently clarified the old standards to develop realistic guidelines for primary schools. Ultimately they aim to provide variety and help children develop healthier eating habits; correct the problems that exist in their diet and improve educational achievement and ensure all children have a decent cooked meal. There is information on portion sizes with a whole host of menu plans and recipes. There are check lists and links to any other information that might be useful, what could possible go wrong?!

What’s wrong with children’s diets?

I have written a piece in The Conversation that went out yesterday . Basically, my article outlines what children (aged 5-7) need to eat. Considering the latest National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS, 2014) results, these new standards are very welcome in my mind. The NDNS revealed children are consuming too much saturated fat, salt and sugar with  intakes of fruit and vegetables, fibre and oily fish all below recommendations.

Albeit not necessarily at the same time, children are generally eating the same sort of food as their parents – as a population, we rely heavily on convenience and so the snack and ready meal markets (including those aimed at children) are booming as a result.  At least school meals can help by banning confectionery and limiting processed food. In 2010, Datamonitor (an independent research company) reported British children spent an average £372 on sweets and chocolates every year, equivalent to about 850 Mars bars!

I am not saying never ever give a child junk but foods like chicken nuggets, burgers and sausages and cake should still be an occasional ‘treat’. I am uncomfortable with them being on a school menu. Now I don’t have a problem with pudding, but who is actually tracking the sugar content of those offered to children?

Coming along later today will be my views on the revised school standards for UIFSM’s. I am not exactly sure I understand them myself so how will schools interpret them?!

Did you know nearly 1/5 of children believe potatoes and pasta come from animals?

The British Nutrition Foundation’s (BNF) Healthy Eating week has been launched today. Thankfully, over 1.7 million children will be learning valuable lessons at nursery and school this week about where food comes from, how to store it safely, cooking and healthy eating. Why am I pleased about this? Because research conducted by the British Nutrition Foundation, (that asked >13,000 school children across the UK all about food; where it comes from and which foods they eat) has just been released with some pretty worrying findings…….are you ready for this? (Summarised from the BNF report)

  • 25% of 5-8 yr olds and 14 % of 8-11 yr olds surveyed think that bread comes from animals.
  • 26% of 5-8 yr olds and 22% of 8-11 yr olds think that cheese comes from plants.
  • Nearly 20% of primary school children said that potatoes come from animals.
  • Almost 25% of primary school children and 13% of 8-11 yr olds, think that pasta comes from animals.
  • 10% of primary school children surveyed think that bacon comes from sheep.
  • 17% think that fish fingers come from chicken.
  • For the 2nd year running their research shows 52% of 11-16 yr olds think that carbohydrate provides more energy than either fat or protein.  (No, fat has around 9 Calories / gram, protein and carbohydrate have about 4 Cal/g).

Dear oh dear oh dear. It might seem amusing at first but there is a very serious side to this and sadly I am not really surprised by these findings. We live in a society that relies heavily on processed, convenience foods, where a meal simply does not resemble the original form any more. We’ve got used to ordering take-outs or regularly eating out, so our relationship with food in its raw state has been lost. We no longer cook the way we used to, the tradition of learning from our nanny or mum has disappeared, we don’t have the time or don’t make the time to cook and eat together. How on earth can we expect our children to know where food comes from if we don’t show them? The responsibility of being a parent is to role-model; children learn by copying and I think we are already half way down that road where the oven becomes redundant. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not entirely the parents’ fault; schools have a huge responsibility too, but I’ll come to them in a bit…………

Now it wasn’t all bad! 

  • Encouragingly, around 20% of older children (11-16 yr olds) want to know more about where their food comes from Yippee!
  • Around 80% of 5-11 yr olds have grown food either at home or at school Fantastic!
  • On the whole, secondary school children’s knowledge about vitamins and minerals is encouraging with 74% accurately matching vitamin C with citrus fruit and 83% matching calcium with dairy products Phew!

So what else did they report?

Eat well plate (NHS Choices, 2013)

Five a Day

  • ~86% of children between 5 and 16 yrs know that they should eat five or more portions of fruit and vegetables each day. This is great, BUT this knowledge doesn’t seem to translate into behaviour, with an average of only 30% of school children saying they actually ate that amount the day before the survey. Now the trouble with this surveys is that it’s a snapshot in time, not necessarily representative of the typical daily diet, but I imagine it’s not far off the mark.
  • There is some confusion among children about which foods count towards their 5 a day.  Around 20% of 14-16yr olds do not think that canned fruit and vegetables count; whereas in fact both frozen and canned types do count.
  • The other issue is that >40% of the same children think that potatoes count towards their 5 a day, whereas in fact, they are grouped with other starchy foods in the UK’s eatwell plate food guide, rather than with fruit and vegetables.

By eating more fruit and veg, we do automatically tend to eat less rubbish but kids don’t do the shopping, we do! If we want our kids to eat fruit and veg, we have to buy it.  It doesn’t have to be the most expensive forms – tinned and frozen are absolutely fine! Get your kids involved in the shopping. Rather than do it all on line and get it delivered to your doorstep, take them with you and let them pick and choose one that they want! Let them feel it, smell it, eat it! Try things you haven’t had before. As a whole family you can experiment together!

Breakfast

  • On the day of the 2014 survey, 7% of primary school children,  23% of 11-14 yr olds and 32% of 14-16 yr olds said they hadn’t eaten breakfast that morning!
  • 47% of 11-14 year olds and 59% of 14-16 yr olds say that they skip meals!

Breakfast IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY so please make it a priority! Children and adults who skip breakfast are more likely to be overweight, make unhealthier food choices and are less able to concentrate and focus (plus be in a bad mood!) at school or work.

Hydration

  • Children seem to know they should be drinking regularly but again their knowledge doesn’t necessarily translate into action.
  • 26% of primary school children and 48% of secondary school children know that they should drink between 6-8 drinks each day and yet only half of these children actually said they consume that amount.

Don’t forget, water and milk are the best options for children. Limit fruit juice to meal times, just once a day and try to dilute it a little.

Fish

  • Children as young as 5-8 years old understand the value of eating fish, with 96% saying we should all eat some fish each week.
  • Similarly, 58% of secondary school children know we should eat two portions each week.  
  • However, 26% of secondary school children surveyed in Scotland claim never to eat fish.  23% of children of the same age in Wales, 20% of those in Northern Ireland and 19% of all secondary school children surveyed in England also say they never eat fish.

Lots of evidence supports the fact we should be eating more fish, particularly the oily varieties like salmon, mackerel, sardines and pilchards  – unfortunately the fishy fish, which kids can often turn their noses up at. The healthy polyunsaturated fats in these types of fish are fantastic for brain development as well as reducing the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and raised cholesterol. Please limit the battered variety!

School lunch

  • Around half of all school children have school lunch rather than a packed lunch. Which I am pleased about, providing schools provide the healthy meals they are supposed to. Packed lunches can be notoriously variable in terms of their healthiness, depending on the rules set by the school and the parents who pack them!
  • 76% of primary school children say they like school lunch compared with 66% of 8-11 yr olds. 
  • 82% of children aged 11–16 years rate their school lunch as OK, good or very good. It will be interesting to see if this level of satisfaction remains when schools have to offer free school meals later this year.

I think it was back in 2010 that I remember watching Jamie Oliver on a TV programme being horrified that kids did not know what a tomato looked like, what an aubergine was, or that potatoes grew in the ground. Naively I assumed we had moved on since then, now that food and healthy eating has become a slightly bigger part of the National Curriculum but alas we still seem to have quite a way to go.

So the results from this survey despite being worrying, could be very useful, providing someone acts on them (mentioning no names, I hate politics!) These results should help inform further policies and regulations to help improve the situation.  They emphasise that we need to do more, but no-body seems to have a magic wand. This will not be easy and certainly won’t happen overnight.

I read with relief that schools will be introducing new food, cooking and nutrition aspects in the National Curriculum in England from September of this year and so, feeling optimistic, we SHOULD see improvements on future surveys? But the Government has a huge responsibility too – they refuse to remove junk food advertising from children’s TV and this is a major problem that needs to be tackled. And there has to be control over marketing unhealthy foods to children. Whose job is this?! Discussions are ongoing with food manufacturers to further cut salt, fat and sugar levels in our processed foods but they need to take more responsibility too on how they label and market their products. We are so confused and lost when it comes to healthy eating; told to do one thing one day then something else the next. We struggle understanding food labels, we are tricked by ruthless marketing strategies, we struggle with cooking healthily, we watch too much TV or spend hours staring into our smart phones and tablets (me included!)……..the list goes on. Obesity is complicated!

But then I read this in ‘The Grocer

  • “Nearly 20% of Brits are not aware that apples are grown in the UK.
  • In a survey of 2,000 adults, 19% of people did not know British farmers grew apples
  • Some 63% of those surveyed did not know British farmers grow blueberries, while 50% did not realise UK farmers grow strawberries. 
  • Knowledge of the UK’s veg and salad growing was similarly poor, with 21% unaware UK farmers grow carrots, 29% not knowing British farmers grow cauliflower and 37% unaware they grow iceberg lettuce”

So it looks like not just children will benefit from these lessons, so will many adults! I love the idea of kids being inspired by food and healthy eating, that they will get their parents interested and on board with implementing what they learn in school.
